GWYGH, Ep. 008: Don't Mean a Thing (Janine's Notes)

In our last episode, we watched Swing Girls (2004), a Japanese movie. While watching the movie, Janine took notes on the plot as it progressed. Basically, these notes are a stream of consciousness as Janine watched this movie.

  • Starts with summer vacation
  • Cicada noises yay!
  • Summer school for make-up classes!
  • The girls are all doing their makeup, eating snacks, relaxing hahaha
  • One even has a massaging thing under her shirt. Legendary
  • The girl by the window is jealous of the kids who are leaving for marching band
  • The band bus left before the caterer could give them their lunch
  • So the summer school kids take a bus to catch up with them!
  • One girl steals a lunch, which, like, relatable
  • They fall asleep and don’t get off at the right exit
  • They walk after the train and fall into the water
  • One guy didn’t get his lunch (cause the girls ate it)
  • It’s obvious they ate it because there’s rice on her chin
  • All the people who ate the lunch get sick because of the gross mud and stuff the girls fell into probably!
  • The main girl (Tomoko) is scolded by her mom for never learning how to use her computer - apparently she never sticks with anything long enough to learn it
  • The news shows that the whole band got sick! Sent to the hospital
  • HAH the teacher who lost out on going to Hawaii because she had to stay with the band mumbles “Hawaii” as she goes into the ambulance
  • The one guy who survived is looking to create a new brass band
  • One girl comes in with a recorder… two girls come in with a guitar and a bass and start jamming
  • All the girls who delivered the lunches have to join the band!
  • The girls play around with the brass instruments, putting them on their heads and blowing bubbles with them
  • One girl knocks over a stack of records and it rolls down the hall, where a baseball player picks it up
  • “There’s no way we’ll win without the band!” okay dude calm down
  • They decide to go big band style - like the record that drifted away, that was cute
  • “Jazz is for fuddy-duddys, for intellectual types swirling brandy-sniffers.” true
  • They have to jog to get their lung capacity up for band
  • *points to the rockers* “why don’t they have to run?” he’s too scared to make them run lol
  • Practice includes putting a tissue against the window and blowing to keep it up there as long as they can
  • One girl keeps killing it, the girl who came in with the recorder (and who is kind of bullied at first)
  • Aw one girl goes to the baseball practice to watch, and plays with a small reed of sorts to cheer him on
  • “There’s no way this practice will make us musicians!”
  • Of course, the talented girl (Sekiguchi) starts nailing the practice
  • Sekiguchi starts doing scales!
  • All the girls break into their brass sections in different classrooms, they really start to try!
  • “Starting to enjoy it?” “OF COURSE NOT” hahah
  • They start practicing together as a band, and it’s…. Bad, of course, they’ve only been playing a few days, but they’ve been improving!
  • The band recovers and replaces the replacement girls, and they’re all bummed about it
  • They all pretend that they didn’t want to play anyway
  • Aw, Sekiguchi wanted to keep hers :(
  • Oh no they’re all sniffling and crying cause they wanted to play :( :(
  • Omg, when the boar attacks, and “what a wonderful world starts playing” OMG NAOMI’S BUTT KILLS THE BOAR BY CRACKING ITS SKULL HOLY COW I LOVE IT
  • The boar had been ruining crops, so they get reward money
  • “I feel sorry for the boars” “He was ruining crops, it was God’s justice!”
  • They buy used instruments with the reward money
  • There’s a mouse living in the drum! Hahah
  • “You’re the only one who has a clue, get with it!”
  • The rocker girls talk about getting them fixed, takes them to their ex-boyfriends who work at a junkyard
  • The guys are talking in like, yakuza speech, trying to pretend to be all unbothered by the girls not loving them anymore haha
  • The guys are now a FOLK DUO BAND
  • They perform a song called “You Ditched Me but I’m Loving You” omfffffg
  • They start repairing the instruments with spare parts!
  • They call themselves “Swing Girls” and start performing in the park! Omg it’s so cute
  • People begin throwing stuff at them to get them to stop
  • THEY START PERFORMING IN A KARAOKE CLUB ROOM!!! And they get in trouble
  • “Listen, you could play that stuff at my place.” THIS GUY JUST… OFFERS THEM A PLACE TO PERFORM…. I love it
  • They perform but no one likes them and they keep messing up :(
  • Then they get told to stop it because music is wrecking the guy’s business
  • Sekiguchi was talking to this guy who says “you gotta have swing”
  • “Hitting the same groove matters more than the notes” hey
  • HEY
  • IT DOOOON’T MEAN A THING
  • IF IT AAAAAIN’T GOT THAT SWING
  • The girls chase after the guy who offered that advice to find out who he is
  • They follow him to his house… where he’s listening to jazz on a record, and has a beautiful saxophone on display
  • Of course the girls are creeping and watching him
  • OMG HE’S SWILLING BRANDY. JUST LIKE THEY SAID EARLIER
  • “He’s really swilling brandy”
  • It’s their sensei! From the make up courses!!
  • “When I hear you massacre the music, it ticks me off.”
  • He’s a big jazz fiend
  • “Jazz 101, get really good fast” book falls out of the shelf when she picks up the sax
  • The girls are convinced he’s going to teach them jazz, and he just agrees haha
  • It flashes forward to him practicing, and he admits he just bought the book and sax a few years ago, and now he needs to learn how to play it haha
  • HE’S READING FROM HIS NOTES HE TOOK IN HIS CLASS TO TEACH THE GIRLS
  • They listen to the noise from the cross walk and begin to make it jazzy haha
  • Omg this mom pulls her kid away from them as they start clapping and stuff to the music
  • They clap and dance around everywhere! Haha I love it
  • Swing Girls begins to make some good music! They perform outside a store and people love it!!
  • Hahaha Nakamura writes “and a boy” under the “SWING GIRLS” on the poster
  • These girls who originally left see the Swing Girls perform and then go into a music instrument store to buy some instruments - they’re told to sell their old designer clothes to afford it - and they join the Swing Girls!
  • Student music festival is coming up!
  • They have to submit an audition tape, so they go perform on the roof at the school, with all the snow behind them for a pretty scenery
  • Tomoko is given the tape to send in
  • All the girls get into a big snowball fight hahah
  • The professional band says that jazz is hard for “classical musicians” to enjoy
  • Tomoko realizes she forgot to send in the tape!
  • Nakamura sees the math teacher taking lessons and realizes he’s not a musician after all
  • He promises not to tell the others
  • It’s literally the day of the festival and Tomoko has not yet told everyone she didn’t turn in the tape
  • The girls think that Nakamura is confessing his love to Tomoko when he’s talking to her about how she’s feeling… and she lets him know about the tape, and he lets the others know
  • The train has been stopped because of the weather
  • The train conductor begins to play some music, so the girls start playing along, which is cute
  • They couldn’t make it at first, but they run onstage just in time!!
  • Obviously they do a great job or it wouldn’t be a good movie
  • She put a little mouse on her instrument. My heart
